The Kathia Wheat (Triticum durum) is the important cereal crop that plays a vital role in the food and nutritional security of the country. The Kathia Wheat variety - Pusa Mangal (HI-8713) released by the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Regional Wheat Research Station, Indore, Madhya Pradesh is identified for irrigated and timely sown conditions of the central zone.
Shri Prabhu Dayal, a 55 Years-old Progressive Farmer of the Village Khiriya, Lalitpur District of Bundelkhand Region of Uttar Pradesh owns 5.0 hectares of land that is primarily mono-cropped wheat (Triticum). The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Lalitpur selected him as one of the Progressive Farmers for conducting the On-Farm Testing during 2018-19. Shri Prabhu Dayal was provided with 40 Kg seeds of improved Kathia Wheat variety HI-8713 (Pusa Mangal) for sowing on 1.0 acre area along with the other technical knowhow. He also produced local Kathia Variety on 1.0 acre and improved variety (HI-8713) of Kathia Wheat was sown in one acre.
With a higher production of the improved Kathia Wheat Variety production (20.8 q/ha), with a market price of Rs. 2,500/q, his gross income from demonstration plot (1.0 acre) Rs. 52,000/-, he earned net income of Rs. 40,800/acre from the improved variety of HI-8713 with Rs. 11,200/acre as the cost of cultivation.
Encouraged by his experiences for the last two years, he sown 20.0/ha area of own, lease land and 110 ha covered under the Kathia Wheat in the Rabi Season of 2020-21 in the nearby villages. The total production of Kathia Wheat from his farm was 500 q with gross income of Rs. 12.5 Lakhs.
Today, he is a popular farmer in the area. Thus, within a three years duration, that is, from 2018-19 to 2020-21, with the introduction of the improved Kathia Wheat variety, Shri Prabhu Dayal’s area under the Kathia Wheat enhanced from 1 acre to 50 ha. leading to an enhancement in production from 20.0 q to 500.0 q and gross income from Rs. 0.5 lakh/- to Rs. 12.5 lakh/-.
Now, Shri Prabhu Dayal intends to grow Kathia Wheat on a larger scale. He is also planning to encourage other farmers to take-up cultivation. The enhanced productivity, low cost of production and better market price ensuring higher returns were among the main reasons for the farmer to adopt the Kathia Wheat cultivation.
