A national level consultation meeting on ‘Soil Health Assessment’ organized at Indian Institute of Soil Science (IISS), Bhopal on 26th February, 2014. Dr. A.K. Sikka, Deputy Director General (NRM), ICAR reviewed the flagship programmes of the institute in the light of 12th plan EFC.
Dr. Sikka also reviewed the thrust areas of AICRPs in terms of technical programmes, performance of centers, budgets, staff etc. He emphasized upon the need for more synergy between institute projects and AICRPs, institutionalization of interaction among institutes, divisions and AICRPs. Dr. Sikka also stressed upon the partnerships, policy, institutional support and location-specific technologies to reach to the teeming millions of the country. Dr. Sikka also visited the laboratories, PC units, latest infrastructural/analytical facilities of the institute.
Dr. S.S. Khanna, Former Advisor (Agriculture), Planning Commission; Dr. J.C. Katyal, Former VC, CCSHAU, Hisar; Dr. S.K. Chaudhari, ADG (SWM), ICAR; and Dr. S.K. Singh, Director, NBSS&LUP, Nagpur also participated in the meeting.
The meeting envisaged identifying minimum dataset for assessment of soil quality; proposed methodology for estimating soil quality indices (SQI); established threshold levels for soil quality to develop strategies for soil health management; and identified management sensitive indicators in relation to input use efficiency and food security.
