A Dhanya Mahotsav (Food Grain Festival) was organized at Krishi Viggyan Kendra (KVK), Baramati on 21-23 April, 2013, with the objective of bringing the farmers and consumers on one platform where the farmers could directly sell their product to consumers avoiding middle men/traders,
KVK identified farmers to ensure the availability of variety of farm produce in the festival. The farm produce available for sale were wheat, rice, jowar, bajra, finger millet, watermelons, muskmelons, pulses, vegetables, turmeric, honey, raisins, sugar etc. Rice varieties like Indrayani, AmbeMohor, Tamsal, Basmati, and wheat, jowar had excellent demand. In 3 days, 13 tons of jowar, 6.4 tons of wheat, 8.3 tons of rice, 2.15 tons of pulses, 2 tons of melons, 1.5 tons of sugar and 150 Kg turmeric powder were sold.
In this new initiative of KVK, Baramati, farmers from six different blocks from two districts viz. Pune and Satara (Bhor, Velha, Baramati, Indapur, Khed, Purandar, and Phaltan) participated in the food grain festival with their farm produce. Nearly 35 farmers and 1,750 families participated in the festival and purchased farm produce worth rupees 15 lakhs. Local Agri Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) provided the space free of cost to the KVK to organize the food festival.
