Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research inaugurated Silver Jubilee Laboratory Building, Rural Technology Centre (RTC) and Brackishwater Farmers Meet at Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) Research Centre, Kakdwip on 15th May 2013.
While delivering the inaugural address, Dr. Ayyappan emphasized upon the ICAR Farmers First approach to address the problems faced by farmers and urged scientists to discuss and deliberate various issues for sustainable development of brackishwater fish and shrimp culture in India. He also informed that ICAR will come out with mega seed bank and village level cold storage facilities to help farming communities in Sundarban. Dr. Ayyappan appreciated CIBA for the development and transfer of sustainable technologies under various National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) projects.
Silver Jubilee Laboratory Building is well equipped with sophisticated equipments like PCR, gel documentation system, fluorescent microscopy and will cater the need of farmers in rapid disease diagnosis and development of brackishwater shrimp and fish culture. Rural Technology Centre (RTC) developed under NAIP aims to promote the technical know-how and skills of farmers. This will also help to develop a better tie-up between the Kakdwip Research Centre and the farming communities in Sundarban.
Earlier, Dr. A.G. Ponniah, Director, CIBA welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted the achievements and technologies developed by CIBA.
Progressive farmers shared their views and acknowledged the help extended by the institute. During the farmers meet four leaflets were released in local language and Mr. Debakinanda Patra, a progressive farmer was felicitated for his innovations in brackiswater aquaculture. An interaction session of farmers with the scientist of CIBA was held to address the problems of farmers.
Dr. C.S Chakrabarti, Vice Chancellor, West Bengal University of Animal and Fisheries Science, Dr. Madan Mohan, Assistant Director General (Marine Fisheries), ICAR, Dr. A. P. Sharma, Director, CIFRI and Dr. P.K. Katiha, National Co-ordinator, NAIP also graced the occasion. Officials from CIFE, CIFRI, NDRI, IVRI Kolkata Centre, CIFA, MPEDA, State Fisheries Department and faculty members from the West Bengal University of Animal and Fisheries Sciences and a large number of farmers participated in the brackishwater interaction meet.
