Sh. A. J. Shah, IAS, District Magistrate, Kachchh inaugurated NAIP sponsored 3-day workshop on “Prosopis juliflora- Retrospect and Prospects” as Chief Guest here today. He emphasized the need to promote Prosopis juliflora and utilize its positive properties. This species has a great potential in this region for livelihood support to the local population. Sh. Trikam Bhai Chhanga, Chairman, District Panchayat, Kuchchh and the guest of honour said that valuable natural plant resources in this area including Prosopis should receive due attention and care for its use by the communities. Prof. Tushar Hathi, Vice Chancellor of Kachchh University, Bhuj and Chairman of the Session stressed the need to understand the socio-economic dynamics in the region and then relate it to Prosopis promotion schemes.
Dr. M. M. Roy, Director CAZRI suggested that proper management – technical, financial and socio-economic-considerations are important for promotion of this species. Earlier, Dr. Devi Dayal, Head, CAZRI-RRS, Bhuj welcomed the guests and participants and Dr. J. C. Tewari CPI, NAIP project talked about objectives of the workshop. More than 150 participants across the country will be deliberating on various scientific and other issues related to P. juliflora for the benefit of rural communities.
