Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary DARE & Director General, ICAR, New Delhi visited NRC on Mithun and ICAR Res. Complex for NEH region, Nagaland Centre, the ICAR Institutes located in Medziphema, Nagaland on 3rd Feb and 4th Feb 2011. During his visit he went around different laboratories of National Research Centre on Mithun in the afternoon of 3rd Feb 2011 and interacted with the scientists. He was pleased to know about the current activities under the ongoing research programme of NRC on Mithun and suggested them to have interaction with the eminent scientists of the related subject matter for further refinement if necessary.
Later he moved out to Molvom village, Medziphema to see the pineapple field and graced the Pineapple Festival of the village as Chief Guest. He was charmed on looking the village full of mature pineapples in the fields and assured to the villagers about the assistance in establishing a primary pineapple processing unit at Medziphema.
On the same evening he had a long discussion with individual scientist working at NRC on Mithun and ICAR Res Complex, Nagaland Centre, participating Directors and scientists working in different ICAR institutes located in eastern and north eastern region in regard to their research projects as well as the facilities available in their respective institutes. He has also discussed about the future programme ear marked for XIIth five year plan. He emphasized about the importance of the collaborative programmes to bringing in vibrancy in different field of research and extension activities.
In the morning of 4th Feb 2011, Hon’ble Director General visited the laboratories of ICAR Res Complex, Nagaland Centre and Mithun farm of NRC on Mithun. He went around the animal sheds of different strains and suggested to develop technologies suitable for present system of rearing for better productivity of mithun as a meat animal. An exhibition was organized for showcasing the different activities of ICAR Institutes and KVKs of Nagaland. The exhibition was inaugurated by Sri T. R. Zeliang, Minister of Planning and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, which was also graced by Dr. C. Murry, Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Nagaland and Hon’ble Director General.
An interface meeting for formulating the strategies to develop agriculture and allied sectors in Nagaland held on 4th February, 2011 at National Research Centre on Mithun (ICAR), Jharnapani, Medziphema, Nagaland under the chairmanship of Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secy. DARE & DG ICAR, New Delhi. In this meeting Dr. K. M. L. Pathak DDG (AS), Dr. (Mrs) B. Meenakumari DDG (Fishery), Dr. Arvind Kumar DDG (Education), Dr. K. D. Kokate DDG (Agri. Extn.), Dr. A. K. Singh (NRM), Dr. S. N. Puri, Vice Chancellor, Central Agricultural University and Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, Vice Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam and Directors of all north eastern ICAR institutes, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Commissioner and Secretaries, Directors and other high officials of Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary departments, Government of Nagaland and Scientist from ICAR institute located at Eastern and North Eastern Region participated and shared their views for bringing in convergence of activities of different organization for enhancing productivity of the state. After the welcome address of Dr. Chandan Rajkhowa, Director, NRC on Mithun, the meeting was inaugurated by Sh. T.R Zeilang, the Hon’ble Minister of Planning, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary as chief guest. Dr. Chumben Murry, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture and Sh. H. K. Khulu, APC and Principal Secretary were also present as Guests of Honour. During the inaugural session a documentary “Zabo: A Traditional Way of Integrated farming” produced by KVK Phek, NRC on Mithun, Nagaland was released by Dr. C. Murry, Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Nagaland and a newsletter “Mithun Digest”, July-Dec. 2010 issue and “A Compendium of Status Papers – Interface Meeting for Development of Agriculture and Allied Sectors in Nagaland” released by T. R. Zeliang, Hon’ble Minister of Planning and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Govt. of Nagaland.
Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secy. DARE & DG ICAR has chaired all the technical sessions and DDGs acted as co-chairmen for sessions of their respective fields. Vice Chancellors of Central Agricultural University and Assam Agricultural University were present throughout the deliberation and they had given their valuable inputs for developing the strategies. In the discussion there were lively participation from ICAR institutes and State Government officials and action points have been decided for the future course of action.
