Lt. Gen (Retd.) A. K. Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands visited the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI), Garacharma on 21st September, 2013.
While complimenting CARI for taking up various research activities, Shri Singh said that the benefits of the research taken up by CARI should reach out to the farmers and fishermen. He also urged to include processing and marketing in its activities. Shri Singh suggested that CARI should shift its focus from the usage of chemical fertilizers pesticides to organic farming and if required, organize exposure trips for farmers. He also emphasized upon the exploiting the huge potential for the fisheries development in view of the vast marine resources available in the Territorial waters of the Islands and stressed upon exploring the possibilities of creating canning and marketing facilities.
Lt. Governor also visited the Poly House Integrated Farming System model at the Garacharma Research Complex and World Coconut Germplasm Collection (WCGC) Farm at Sippighat Farm.
Earlier, Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI made a brief presentation on the 35 years journey of CARI, research, development and extension activities and its accomplishments. He also acknowledged the functional linkages which the Institute is having with the development departments of Andman & Nicobar Administration.
Shri Anand Prakash, Chief Secretary; Secretary to LG, Secretary (Agriculture/Fisheries and Animal Husbandry) and Directors of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Departments were also present on the occasion.
