Student Exposure Visit on Agricultural Research and Innovation at ICAR–CIARI

5 January 2026, Sri Vijaya Puram

A total of 240 students from PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 2, Sri Vijaya Puram, visited the ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute today as part of an exposure programme aimed at familiarizing students with agricultural research, innovation, and sustainable farming practices.

During the programme, students were introduced to various aspects of fisheries science, horticulture, integrated farming systems, aquaculture entrepreneurship, medicinal plants, and smart agricultural technologies. An interactive session on pond ecosystem dynamics highlighted the role of photosynthesis, ecosystem components, and water quality parameters in maintaining dissolved oxygen levels essential for fish health and productivity. The importance of aerators during oxygen depletion and the impact of low oxygen levels on pond productivity were also discussed, with emphasis on practical fisheries management.

Another session focused on year-round vegetable production systems, explaining different methods and practices that ensure continuous availability of vegetables. The nutritional importance of green leafy vegetables was elaborated, highlighting their role in providing essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, along with their health benefits and significance in sustainable agriculture.

Students were also oriented on the Integrated Farming System, which demonstrated how various farm components function synergistically. The approach was explained as an efficient method for optimal resource utilization, recycling of farm waste, reduction in input costs, and enhancement of overall farm productivity, thereby offering higher economic returns in a sustainable manner.

A detailed presentation was delivered on aquarium development and its potential as an alternative livelihood option for island farmers. Students were informed about important aquarium species, including exotic and endemic varieties from the Andaman region, and their scope in promoting sustainable income generation.

In addition, students were briefed on the Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Medicinal Garden, which houses a diverse collection of medicinal and therapeutic plant species. The session aimed to create awareness about regional biodiversity and scientific agricultural practices. The integration of smart technologies such as IoT-based soil sensors for automated irrigation was also showcased, demonstrating efficient water management solutions.
