While on his visit to the ICAR–National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics, Bengaluru, today, Shri Rama Shankar Sinha, Additional Secretary (Livestock Health), Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Government of India, stated that national animal disease surveillance will be digitised and integrated with the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM) portal to enable timely early warning, strengthen disease preparedness, and support evidence-based decision-making in the livestock sector.

Dr. Baldev R. Gulati, Director, ICAR–NIVEDI, briefed the dignitaries on the institute’s national mandate and its pivotal role in advancing digitally enabled livestock health governance. Shri Sinha Ji visited the Disease Informatics Laboratory, WOAH Reference Laboratory, Agri-Business Incubator, and the advanced BSL-2++ core laboratory, where ICAR-NIVEDI scientists showcased ongoing work on disease surveillance, diagnostics, epidemiological modelling, and NDLM-aligned decision-support systems.
During the interaction, Dr. Gulati highlighted the steps being undertaken to pilot a Disease-Free Zoning framework at the district level, with the objective of testing and scaling it up at the state and national levels. He emphasised that this science-based approach would facilitate the creation of livestock disease-free zones, in line with international standards, thereby promoting international trade in livestock and livestock products.

Shri Rama Shankar Sinha assured full support of DAHD for ICAR–NIVEDI’s new initiatives, particularly those focused on NDLM-driven digitalisation and disease-free zoning. The visit was also graced by Dr. P. S. Mahesh, Director, CEAH, Bengaluru, who interacted with the scientists and appreciated ICAR–NIVEDI’s critical role in strengthening national livestock health systems.
