A 3-day Human Resource Development Programme on “From Subsistence to Sustainability: Scientific Animal Husbandry and Aquaculture as Pathways for Smallholder Income Augmentation” was organised successfully by the Directorate of Research, Extension & Farms of West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS), Kolkata in collaboration with ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata for Heads, Subject Matter Specialists (SMS), Farm Managers, Lab Technicians from nine Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of West Bengal.
Dr. T.K. Datta, Vice Chancellor, WBUAFS, in his inaugural address, underscored the need to augment farm income through environmentally sustainable smallholder farming. He noted that scientific animal husbandry and fisheries are key pillars of the rural economy and, with modern technologies, better management, and skilled human resources, can enhance the income of small and marginal farmers manifold.

Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, underscored the transformative power of capacity building intertwined with sustainable practices, portraying them as twin pillars that not only elevate agricultural productivity but also harmonize our endeavors with the environment. Dr. Dey invited KVK personnel to blend scientific innovations with traditional wisdom to cultivate a resilient and prosperous future for small holder farmers.
The training sessions included detailed discussions on modern technologies in animal husbandry and fisheries, disease control, reduction of production costs, nutrition management, and market linkage including hands-on training.
The program witnessed a total of 36 participants of KVKs from Zone-V, actively participated in the interactive session; experts offered practical advice on boosting income of small holders from animal husbandry and aquaculture.
