51st Foundation Day Marked by Women Empowerment through Oyster Mushroom Training in Arunachal Pradesh

On the occasion of the 51st Foundation Day of the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Mushroom organized an oyster mushroom training programme today at the ICAR Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar, Leparada district, Arunachal Pradesh.

The programme witnessed the enthusiastic participation of twenty-one unemployed rural women, with the objective of enhancing livelihood opportunities through mushroom-based enterprises. The training programme was aimed at empowering women through skill development while promoting sustainable and low-cost income generation options suited to the agro-climatic conditions of the region.

During the training programme, Dr. Raghuveer Singh, Principal Investigator, AICRP on Mushroom, highlighted the importance of oyster mushroom as a functional food, rich in essential nutrients and bioactive compounds. He emphasized its vital role in nutritional security, livelihood generation, and food sustainability, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh. He further stressed the need for developing climate-resilient, round-the-year oyster mushroom production systems to ensure consistent productivity and adaptability under changing climatic conditions.

As part of the programme, essential inputs including plastic buckets, hand sprayers, training kits, and informational pamphlets were distributed among the participants to facilitate practical adoption of the demonstrated technologies. The trainees received hands-on training through live demonstrations and interactive sessions, covering all major aspects of oyster mushroom cultivation such as substrate preparation, spawning, crop management, and harvesting inside mushroom cropping rooms.

The programme also included a guided visit to the Mushroom Museum, where participants were introduced to mushroom biodiversity and advanced mushroom production technologies, further enriching their learning experience. In addition, the trainees visited potential crop blocks, Crop Cafeteria, Integrated Farming System (IFS) units, and Khasi Mandarin blocks of the Centre, gaining valuable exposure to integrated and diversified farming systems.

Overall, the training programme significantly contributed to capacity building and empowerment of rural women, while promoting scientific mushroom cultivation as a sustainable livelihood option, thereby aligning with ICAR’s commitment to inclusive growth, nutritional security, and rural development in the North Eastern Hill region.
