ICAR-NBFGR’s transformative efforts towards the conservation of indigenous fishes

ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, through its Centre for Peninsular Aquatic Genetic Resources (PAGR), Kochi, put transformative efforts into releasing the fish seeds of endemic fishes, viz., Yellow Catfish (Horabagrus brachysoma) and Malabar Labeo (Labeo dussumieri) in Peringalkuthu reservoir, Chalakkudy River, Kerala.

Dr. Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, emphasised on conservation efforts through the stocking of indigenous fishes in regional water bodies to support fish production and livelihood.

The work was carried out under the ICAR Consortium Research Platform on Agro-Biodiversity Project. PAGR has taken up the breeding and culture of Yellow Catfish and Malabar Labeo in the ICAR-NBFGR hatchery facility at Panangad. Two-month-old advanced fry, Yellow Catfish (25000) and Malabar Labeo (5000) have been stocked in the reservoir.
