Workshop on Economic Impact of FMD and its control in India

One-day Review Workshop on “Economic Impact of FMD and its control in India” was organized at National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics, Bengaluru.

Dr. R. Venkataramanan, Joint Director, IVRI, Bangalore, the chief guest on the occasion opined that the quantitative documentation of FMD losses will help the policy makers to device appropriate control strategy.

Dr. H. Rahman, Director, NIVEDI reiterated that FMD is one of the most economically important diseases in the country and economic impact study at state and national level is vital for undertaking appropriate mitigation programmes. He also highlighted the methodologies adopted for studying the economic impact of FMD will help in assessing the impact of other important livestock diseases.

Dr.G.Govindaraj, Scientist, NIVEDI welcomed all the participants and appraised the programme plan, methodology and work done by NIVEDI for assessing the economic loss due to FMD in the country. He also presented direct loss estimates for different states based on the first round of survey.
Dr.B.Ganeshkumar, Principal Scientist, NAARM highlighted the importance of socioeconomic survey in assessing the loss due to Foot and Mouth Disease in the country.

The NIVEDI scientists and officials from 10 states and one union territory participated in the review workshop
The officials from different states and union territory presented the mortality and morbidity loss due to FMD in their respective states. The programme plan for the second round of survey were also finalized in this review workshop.
