The Department of Tribal Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the ICAR–National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources to enhance livelihood opportunities for tribal communities in Pulicat (Tiruvallur district) and Pitchavaram (Cuddalore district). The initiative focuses on income generation through sustainable aquaculture practices.

Under the programme, ICAR–NBFGR scientists provided hands-on training to beneficiaries in Pearlspot culture, crab fattening, and clownfish rearing. A cluster-mode rearing unit for clownfish, developed at Chenchi Amman Nagar, Pulicat, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu via video conference today. The Chief Minister also launched livelihood activities for tribal families in the Killai and Pitchavaram regions, benefitting a total of 200 participants across both districts.
Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR–NBFGR, emphasized the institute’s continued efforts toward conserving aquatic germplasm from various water bodies to support sustainable utilization and livelihood improvement in both inland and coastal areas. He stated that ICAR–NBFGR has established a master facility for clownfish breeding at the Annamalai University campus, with seed production geared toward supplying beneficiaries for rearing and subsequent marketing.

Providing further details, the Head, PAGR, ICAR–NBFGR, stated that market linkages have already been created between local beneficiaries and aquarium traders to support commercial viability.
