Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer's Welfare, visited the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, (Regional Station) Jalandhar during his official tour to Punjab.
The Minister was accompanied by Dr. M.L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) & Director General, (ICAR) and other senior officials. The visit commenced with a tree plantation ceremony, followed by the National Song “Vande Mataram”.
The Minister accompanied by senior officials, toured the Institute's research facilities and was briefed on critical research activities including advanced potato breeding, varietal development, natural farming practices, crop geometry optimization, soilless media systems and digital agricultural solutions through mobile applications. He witnessed a live demonstration of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for field monitoring and an aeroponics seed production system. The Minister also visited the nucleus and breeder seed production farms.
He participated in a dialogue session with potato growers, listening to their concerns regarding crop production, market linkages and policy implementation. He expressed his commitment to implementing appropriate and farmer-centric policy decisions based on issues raised during the interaction.
Dr. Jat appreciated the dedicated efforts of the institute in developing and extending various technologies to the farming community and emphasized the importance of translating research into practical solutions for farmers.
The visit was also attended by Dr. Parvender Sheron, Director of ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone 1, Ludhiana; Dr. H. S. Jat, Director, ICAR-Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana; scientists and other senior officials.
