Dr. D. B. Shakyawar, Director, ICAR–NINFET, Kolkata, addressed the gathering as Guest of Honour, stressing the potential of Eri silk and pineapple leaf fibres in enhancing tribal income. He also highlighted the institute’s ongoing initiatives across the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam to promote sustainable natural fibre enterprises.

The inaugural session highlighted the rich natural resources of the region particularly Eri silk and pineapple cultivation, which hold immense potential in the tribal belts of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong. Speakers emphasized that despite this abundance, pineapple leaf fibres remain underutilized, and traditional tribal weaving practices need better access to technology, training, and market linkages.
