Closing Ceremony of Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan and Brainstorming Session on Livestock Sector Development Organised at ICAR-NRC on Mithun

ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland, organised the closing ceremony of the 15-day national campaign Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan 2025 along with a brainstorming session on ‘Development of Livestock Sector in Nagaland’ today.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AHVS), Government of Nagaland, ICAR-Nagaland Centre, and ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Dimapur. It brought together policymakers, scientists, veterinarians, and farmers to deliberate on strategies for strengthening the livestock sector in the state.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Commissioner, Animal Husbandry, DAHD, Government of India, urged for community-driven initiatives, livestock policies at the district level, promotion of poultry and fish farming, and branding of Mithun as a symbol of Nagaland’s cultural and agricultural identity.

Shri Vikeyie Kenya, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, AHVS, Government of Nagaland, emphasized conservation of indigenous breeds, enhancing productivity, and empowering women and youth through livestock-based livelihood programs.

Shri Mhathung Yanthan, Advisor, Agriculture, Government of Nagaland, underscored the significance of farmer-policy dialogues and urged for realistic, farmer-centric strategies to achieve Viksit Nagaland by 2047, in line with the national vision of Viksit Bharat. He stated that 67.20% of funds under the CMMFI in Nagaland have been directed toward livestock.

Shri Ninong Ering, Member of Legislative Assembly and Advisor, Department of Hydro Power, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, stressed on inclusive development and prioritization of the Northeast under the Viksit Bharat framework.

Dr. Girish Patil, Director, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, highlighted the economic significance of livestock in Nagaland and the need for focused policy and research support. He pointed out the paradox of high meat consumption versus declining livestock numbers in the state, underlining the urgency for interventions.

The technical session featured presentations by leading experts.
