Sensitization Workshop on Blossom Midge Menace in Floriculture

ICAR-Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune organized a sensitization workshop on blossom midge menace in floriculture: challenges and management” today, bringing together 197 participants including farmers, nurserymen, students, researchers, and university faculty from across the country.

The Chief Guest, Dr. N.K. Krishnakumar, Former Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science), ICAR, called for focused research on biological control, identification of resistant varieties, and a deeper understanding of the physiological interactions between midges and floral hosts.

The Guest of Honor, Dr. Abraham Verghese, Former Director, ICAR-NBAIR, Bengaluru, highlighted the need to popularize farmer-friendly, practical measures for managing blossom midges in crops like tuberose and jasmine. He also emphasized the importance of monitoring midge activity in flowering trees, which may serve as unnoticed breeding grounds for pest buildup.

Dr. K.V. Prasad, Director, ICAR-DFR, highlighted the Directorate's sustained efforts in the diagnosis and management of new devastating pest, blossom midge in floricultural crops such as tuberose, jasmine, and orchids. He emphasized the importance of integrated pest management strategies tailored to this emerging threat.

The workshop facilitated meaningful dialogue and knowledge exchange, paving the way for collaborative efforts to combat blossom midge infestations and promote sustainable floriculture in India.
