A training-cum-Capacity building Programme on Palmyrah Promotion and products utilization was organized for rural youth under the Schedule Caste Sub Plan Programme by ICAR-AICRP on Palm center, Pandirimamidi at, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh today.

Planting material and palm Jaggery kits were also distributed under Tribal Sub Plan.

The programme was organized as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahostav to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence.

At the outset, Dr. Lalitha Kameswari, Head, KVK, Pandirimamidi briefed about the importance of Palmyrah tree and value-added products.

A mature Palmyra tree yields 125-150 liters of sap and from this 20-25 kg of jaggery, and/or 15 kg of palm candy can be produced. Non-edible products such as leaves and fibers can be used to make boxes, baskets, mats, brooms, rope, fans, winnows and much more for the rural folk to use for daily needs.

Based on rough estimates, an average minimum net income of Rs. 1,500 can be gained from one tree (the current market price for Palm jaggery is between Rs. 150-600 per kg).

The program was followed by a demonstration and distribution of various farmer-friendly farming tools and implements. Coconut seedling and palm jaggery kits distributed to 25 SC and 25 ST rural youth.

About 60 participants including scientists and staffs of AICRP on Palm, Pandirimamidi, farm women, rural youth, Personnel from line departments participated in the programme.
