Stakeholder Interface to Promote Ornamental Aquaculture through Cooperative Models Organised

26 June 2025, Goa

ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, organized a stakeholder interface meeting today to promote ornamental aquaculture and initiate the formation of a cooperative society for ornamental fish farmers in the state.

Scientists from the institute emphasized the significant untapped potential of ornamental fish farming in Goa and advocated for cooperative models as a pathway to sustainable growth. Farmers were encouraged to begin the cooperative formation process by submitting their personal and operational details.

The discussions identified critical support areas including broodstock development, hatchery infrastructure, and live feed production. Experts shared practical experiences in small-scale ornamental fish farming, highlighting a successful guppy seed production model using silpaulin tanks, and stressed the importance of using high-quality SPF broodstock and maintaining genetic purity in early generations.

Participants also raised concerns about the heavy dependence on wild-caught fish for the local market. In response, the scientists suggested exploring and promoting indigenous ornamental fish species to strengthen the domestic supply chain.

The meeting concluded with a strong show of interest from the farmers in forming a cooperative. The institute assured continued technical and institutional support to further develop ornamental aquaculture in the region.

The interface brought together approximately 15 ornamental fish farmers from across Goa.
