Nutritional kitchen gardening is the practice of growing fresh, nutrient-dense vegetables, fruits, and herbs in backyard spaces, containers, or rooftops to ensure a continuous, low-cost supply of micronutrients for the household.
This concept is made popular among farm families of Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal. On the occasion of Poshan Maah 2026 a capacity building training on nutritional gardening and awareness camps have been organized across the district by Uttar Dinajpur KVK along with other line departments.

Villages under Nutri-Sensitive Agricultural Resources and Innovations (NARI) project have been revisited and many of the farmwomen acted as Master Trainers in awareness programmes conducted by KVK during Poshan Maah. Nutritional gardens have showed social as well as economic impact among farm families providing household nutritional security and extra income.
In capacity building programme, improved agricultural practices like intercropping, sequential cropping and mixed cropping have been taught to farm women. Small composting units have been developed by farmwomen and they also adopted eco- friendly practices. Millets, green leafy vegetable, fruit trees and common medicinal plants were the important components of nutria-gardens. Farmwomen were facilitated in getting new market channels like urban organic haat.

Nutri -smart kitchen garden concept is getting popular among farm women of adjoining villages of nutri- smart villages due to its positive impacts like diet diversity, social and economic upliftments.
Approximately 65 women including members of 7 SHGs of nutria-smart villages participated in the training and also many have started this type of gardening or made improvement in their existing practices.
