A National Farmers’ Fair Cum Vegetable Show-Casing was organized at ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi in collaboration with Association for Promotion of Innovation in Vegetable (APIV) to educate the farmers regarding vegetable and agriculture production, which is economically, environmentally and technologically sustainable.
Dr. Gautam Kalloo, Ex Vice Chancellor, JNKVV, Jabalpur and Ex DDG (Hort. & Crop Sciences), ICAR, his inaugural address highlighted the new research and development in the area of vegetable production. He emphasized the importance of micronutrients and utilization of microbes in vegetable production.
Dr. B. Singh, Director, ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi highlighted the production and distribution of high quality seeds of improved vegetable varieties of ICAR-IIVR. He also added that famers should adopt drip irrigation, mulching, fertigation, integrated pest management and value addition in vegetables to fulfil the vegetable requirement of our growing population. He also emphasized women empowerment and farmer’s participation in hybrid seed production. He informed that under the flagship programme of the Prime Minister of India, “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav”, ICAR-IIVR has adopted five villages from each district of Chandauli, Gazipur, Jaunpur, Mau, Mirzapur, Azamgarh and Varanasi and the scientist of ICAR-IIVR regularly visiting in these villages.
Dr. Gopalji Trivedi, former Vice Chancellor, RAU, Pusa, Bihar, Dr. A.K. Mehta, Ex. DDG (Extenstion), ICAR and Dr. R.P. Singh, Director, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, were the special guests of the function. They emphasized on protected cultivation and increasing the income of famers besides increasing productivity of vegetables by adopting new technologies in the field of processing, preservation and storage of vegetables.
Farmer’s president Shri Rameshwar Singh, Sonbhadra, shared his happiness about increase of farmer’s welfare and women empowerment due to intervention of ICAR-IIVR varieties and technologies.
The event was attended by about 5000 farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Gujrat. They were acquainted with modern technologies of vegetables, fruits, cereals, oilseed and mushroom production, poultry and fish culture through lecture by experts and exhibition.
The total of 40 stalls related to vegetable, potato, seeds, fertilizer, beneficial microbes, fisheries, onion garlic etc. had been displayed by various research Institutes and KVKs under the aegis of ICAR, Agricultural Universities, Government and Private Sectors.
Famers were awarded for their contribution in vegetable production.
