Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Dr. S.B. Dandin, Vice Chancellor, University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, Karnataka signed an MoU for establishment of 631st Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Kolar District at National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi here today.
Dr. K. D. Kokate, DDG (Agriculture Extension) informed that new KVK, first in the XIIth Plan period, KVK, Kolar will provide technological support required to boost the scientific and climate resilient agriculture in this semi-arid region.
Agro-climatically, the KVK is located in the eastern dry zone of Karnataka. It is a semi-arid drought prone region with an annual rainfall of less than 700 mm. In the dry land situations, farmers are growing millets, groundnut, pulses and mango. With the scarcely available underground water, farmers are cultivating hybrid vegetables and mulberry for silkworm rearing. Fodder for cross-bred cattle is also grown on a limited scale.

Venkatasubramaniam, ADG (Agriculture Extension), Dr. K.C. Bansal, Director, NBPGR, Dr. S. Prabhu Kumar, ZPD, Zone-VIII, Bengaluru and scientists of ICAR and University of Horticulture Sciences were also present on the occasion.
