Annual Group Meeting of All India Coordinated Pearl Millet Improvement Project

Annual Group Meeting of All India Coordinated Pearl Millet Improvement Project was organized at Junagadh Agricultural Univsersity, Junagadh during 11-13 April, 2006. Shri Mahendrabhai Mashru Honorable MLA and Mayor, Junagadh inaugurated the workshop under the Chairmanship of Dr.B. K. Kikani, Honorable Vice-Chancellor , Junagadh Agricultural University . More than 250 delegates comprising the cooperators of various Centres, Directors of Research of SAUs, Representatives from Private Sectors, Non Government Organisations, Media persons, participated in the meeting. Some of the highlights of the above workshop are as under:

4 MSH 155 86 M 52 Identified for growing in summer season under irrigated condition in Pearl Millet growing areas. Average mean yield  4602 kg/ha.

A. Production Technology:

Application of 20 kg ZnSO4/ha enhanced grain and fodder yields. Also foliar application of ZnSO4/ha at tillerilng and pre-flowering stage increased grain and fodder yield.

Maximum grain yield was recorded in plots of dust mulching when trial was conducted to mitigate the adverse effect of drought stress under rainfed condition. Spray of 0.1% thiouorea at tillering and flowering also helped to mitigate drought stress.

B. Crop Protection:

Four entries MH 1336 MH 1364 MH 1392 and Pusa 383 were found to be resistant to smut ergot and blast. Seed treatment with neem oil 5ml/kg seed + spray of 5% N.S.K.E. (neem seed kernel extract) at 50% flowering was found effective treatment in controlling pest contest of Pearl Millet.

C. Breeder Seed produced:

Approximately 34.0 q breeder seed of 36 parental lines of hybrids and ten varieties were produced during 2005 for supply in the year 2006-07 as against a total indent of 13.0q.
