Harness the Pulse Productivity for Self Sufficiency

Jabalpur, 16 June, 2010

“Productivity improvement is the only option for bringing self sufficiency in pulse production” said Dr. K.D.Kokate, Deputy Director General, Agriculture Extension, ICAR in the inaugural session of two-day training programme of KVKs of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on “Harnessing Pulse Productivity” held at Zonal Project Directorate, Zone-VII, Jabalpur during 15-16 June 2010.

In his inaugural speech, Dr. K.D.Kokate said that these three states are major pulse producers but the area, production and productivity is stagnant for the past two decades. He focused on proper management of soil, seed treatment, plant and disease management and effective monitoring of FLD. He appealed all the institutions involved in the pulse demonstrations to work in a synergistic manner for making a remarkable change in the pulse productivity of the region.

Dr. Gautam Kalloo, Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishva Vidyalaya, Jabalpur said that pulse production is highly susceptible to a-biotic stresses. Irrigation management, ridge and furrow method, plant protection, quality as well as timely seed availability are key interventions required to cope up with these stresses.

Dr. N. Nadarajan, Director, Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur said that farmers will not grow much pulses until it would be profitable, which can be done through, policy intervention by increasing Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and demonstrations of available technologies to the farmers.

Dr. U.S. Gautam, Zonal Project Director, Zone-VII, outlined the objectives of training and highlighted that in central India there is 30-40 per cent yield gap between the farmers’ field and the demonstrated technologies in pulse productivity. He opined that this training will help in reducing these gaps. A team of experts interacted with 42 participants attending the training.
