ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Assam celebrated National Fish Farmers’ Day today with a Farmer-Scientist Interactive Meet and Input Distribution Programme, held under the leadership of Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR–IARI.
The Chief Guest, Shri Chandan Pegu, Anchalik Member, Gogamukh Gram Panchayat, emphasized the role of science and technology in reducing farm drudgery and improving productivity. He urged farmers to adopt commercial-scale fish farming for sustainable livelihoods.
Guest of Honour, Smt. Pinki Nam Das, Anchalik Member, Dirpai Mohari Camp Gram Panchayat, addressed the challenges affecting fish production in the region, including poor water retention in soils, substandard seed quality, and limited awareness of scientific fish farming practices.

The event witnessed the participation of 70 fish farmers. To support their efforts, 10,000 quality fish fingerlings including Jayanti rohu, Amur common carp, GI catla, Indian major carps (IMCs), and minor carps were distributed. Additionally, each farmer received 5 kg of lime to address water acidity issues in local ponds.
Three progressive fish farmers were felicitated with certificates of appreciation and traditional Gamosas for their contributions. Scientists from ICAR–IARI Assam addressed farmers' queries during an interactive session, which received positive feedback from participants.
The event was also attended by Scientists-in-Charge, Heads of Divisions, researchers, and local panchayat members.
