From conventional livestock marketing to a ₹11.50-crore enterprise, Meatyns FPC demonstrates how scientific support can create jobs, enhance farmer incomes and build new avenues of rural entrepreneurship.
Kolhapur, Maharashtra: What began as conventional livestock marketing has evolved into a growing, farmer-led meat enterprise, demonstrating the power of science to create tangible economic opportunities at the grassroots. M/s Meatyns Farmer Producer Company (FPC), Kolhapur, with technical support and guidance from the ICAR–National Meat Research Institute, Hyderabad, has successfully embraced hygienic meat processing, value addition and organised marketing to build a stronger and more profitable livestock value chain.

The transformation has enabled the FPC to make better use of locally available livestock resources and move beyond the conventional sale of live animals towards hygienically processed, value-added meat products. Scientific guidance in meat processing, product development, quality assurance, packaging, shelf-life enhancement and entrepreneurship development helped create opportunities for product diversification, branding and organised market access.
The initiative mobilised an investment of ₹7.50 lakh and achieved an impressive annual turnover of ₹11.50 crore. It generated employment for 55 persons and reached 1,100 farmers/beneficiaries across Maharashtra.
The initiative also contributed to an average income enhancement of 10% per beneficiary, while establishing a retail presence through six outlets, strengthening its market reach and visibility.

From an investment of just ₹7.50 lakh, Meatyns has grown into an enterprise recording an annual turnover of ₹11.50 crore. Its operations have generated employment for 55 persons and reached 1,100 farmers and beneficiaries, while contributing to an average 10% enhancement in income per beneficiary. The FPC has also established six outlets across Maharashtra, strengthening its organised market presence.
The impact of the initiative extends across the livestock value chain. By promoting meat processing and organised marketing, the enterprise has created additional opportunities for value realisation for both the FPC and participating livestock producers. Employment has been generated across processing, packaging, marketing, logistics and allied activities, while farmers have gained greater participation in the downstream value chain.

For rural youth and livestock producers, Meatyns is also emerging as a demonstration of how value addition and collective marketing can become viable pathways to entrepreneurship and livelihood generation. The adoption of hygienic processing and food-safety practices has further strengthened awareness of safe meat production and contributed to consumer confidence.
Building on its success, the FPC now envisages taking its annual turnover to more than ₹50 crore within the next two years, reflecting its ambition to scale up the enterprise and further expand opportunities in the meat value chain.
From Laboratory to Livelihood
The Meatyns story illustrates how the convergence of research, technology and entrepreneurship can transform scientific knowledge into enterprise and livelihood opportunities. With institutional support from ICAR-NMRI, scientific expertise has moved from the laboratory to the field—helping build a commercially viable enterprise that generates employment, supports farmer incomes, promotes food safety and encourages rural entrepreneurship.

Meatyns is more than a successful enterprise—it is a demonstration of how science, when connected with farmers and markets, can translate into employment, income and economic empowerment.
