Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sepahijala, CAU (I), Tripura, in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Sepahijala, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of Tripura, and the College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences (CPGS-AS), CAU (I), Umiam, Meghalaya, and with support from ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad, organised a Kisan Mela at Sachin Debbarman Community Hall, Bishramganj, Sepahijala, today.
The event was organised to create awareness among farmers, farm women and rural youth about scientific millet cultivation practices and the role of millets in sustainable agriculture. The programme also focused on promoting climate-resilient farming through millet cultivation and enhancing farmers’ income through value addition.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr Anupam Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, CAU, Imphal, and the technical guidance of Dr Ng. Iboyaima Singh, Director, Directorate of Extension Education, CAU, Imphal; Dr A. K. Mohanty, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Zone VII, Umiam, Meghalaya; and Prof. A. B. Patel, Dean, College of Fisheries, CAU (I), Lembucherra, Tripura.
The Kisan Mela was inaugurated by Smt. Supriya Das Datta, Sabhadhipati, Sepahijala Zilla Parishad, in the presence of Shri Pradip Baran Roy, President, All Tripura Farmers’ Club; Dr Bibhas Kanti De, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of Tripura; Smt Manisha Das, Deputy Director of Horticulture (i/c), Bishalgarh; Prof. A. B. Patel; Dr Shatabhisa Sarkar, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Sepahijala; and other officials and dignitaries. In his address, Dr Bibhas Kanti De highlighted the value and importance of farmers in agriculture and society.
Dr Dwipendra Thakuria, Dean, CPGS-AS, CAU (I), Barapani, Meghalaya, emphasised the importance of millets in sustainable agriculture and balanced fertiliser use.
Dr Ng. Iboyaima Singh highlighted the potential of millet value addition to enhance farmers’ income, while Dr Amulya K. Mohanty, Director, ICAR-ATARI Zone-VII, Umiam (Barapani), Meghalaya, spoke about locally important varieties and the role of KVKs in connecting farmers with research institutions through technology dissemination.
Dr C. Tara Satyavathi, Director, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad, outlined the Institute’s work on millets and their potential for enhancing farmers’ income.
Shri Pradip Baran Roy appreciated KVK Sepahijala’s field-level efforts in promoting natural farming, while Smt. Supriya Das Datta emphasised collaboration with allied departments to maximise outreach and impact.
Four progressive farmers from Golaghati, Badhyardhigi GP, and Chesrimai GP were felicitated as Best Farmers in recognition of their innovative agricultural practices and outstanding contributions to the farming sector.
The technical session covered key aspects of millet and crop production. The economics and prospects of millet cultivation in Tripura were discussed, with emphasis on its potential for improving farm income and strengthening climate-resilient agriculture. The session also covered agronomic practices for Kharif field crops, along with effective strategies for pest and disease management in Kharif crops.
More than 200 farmers, farm women and rural youth actively participated in the Kisan Mela and interacted with agricultural experts and specialists. At the conclusion of the programme, participants were provided with IARI vegetable seed kits, bio-fertilisers from CAU and pheromone traps to support the adoption of improved agricultural practices.
