Under the Central Government's Khet Bachao Abhiyan, ICAR-Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan, Almora organized farmer awareness programs and interactive sessions across various villages in the Hawalbagh and Syalde blocks.
This campaign is being continuously run in different villages from June 1, 2026, under overall guidance of Dr Lakshmi Kant, Director, ICAR-VPKAS, Almora. The main objective of the campaign is to make farmers aware of sustainable and climate-resilient farming, field protection, disease and pest management, soil health, as well as organic and natural farming.

Under the campaign, a total of 63 farmers (31 men and 32 women) participated in the programs organized in Chan, Raun, Dal, and Jurkafoon villages of Hawalbagh. Here, scientists provided practical guidance on balanced nutrition, integrated nutrient management, the preparation and use of natural solutions like Jeevamrit and Ghanjeevamrit, alongside the scientific management of farmyard manure and field protection.
During these sessions, a farmer-scientist dialogue took place regarding the damage caused to crops, especially finger millet, by monkeys, wild boars, and white grubs. Scientists advised adopting measures based on 'VL Light Trap' and 'Bacillus cereus', along with the use of well-decomposed farmyard manure, which can yield better results in 3 to 4 years.
In the same sequence, a total of 40 farmers (08 women and 32 men) participated in the training organized in Patharkhola village of Syalde development block. They were informed about maintaining soil productivity and fertility over the long term through the judicious use of chemical fertilizers and the application of organic matter.

Technical suggestions were also provided for managing frost damage in mango crops. During the programs, farmers were given detailed information about the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Uttarakhand's horticulture and sericulture development schemes, as well as fencing schemes for protection against wild animals. To facilitate benefits from the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, farmers were motivated to create their Farmer IDs in a time-bound manner.
At the village level, farmers and village heads expressed their gratitude to the Institute and requested that their villages be adopted as "Model Field Villages," that livelihood and technical support be provided in a well-planned manner, and that a permanent solution for crop protection from wildlife be delivered.
