ICAR–National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Bengaluru, in collaboration with the Livestock Management Training Centre (LMTC), Sulthan Bathery, organised a Farmer–Scientist Interaction Programme at the APCOS Thariyode Conference Hall, Wayanad, Keralam, today. The programme was organised as part of ICAR-NIANP’s outreach initiatives under the DAPSC/ST initiatives, with support from the Genome Editing project fund, aimed at taking scientific livestock management practices and technologies to farmers in remote tribal areas.
The programme provided a platform for direct interaction between farmers and scientists on various aspects of scientific dairy farming, balanced nutrition, reproductive health and sustainable livestock management.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Sabin George, Registrar, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU).
Dr Artabandhu Sahoo, Director, ICAR-NIANP, as the Guest of Honour, emphasised the importance of balanced nutrition, scientific livestock management and improved reproductive practices for enhancing livestock productivity. He encouraged the farmers to adopt appropriate NIANP technologies for improving animal health and productivity.
Technical literature on scientific livestock management was also released during the programme. As part of the livestock support initiative, cattle feed, rubber mats, feed charts and Fertimin Plus supplements were distributed among the participating farmers.
Dr Aji R., District Animal Husbandry Officer, and Sri Varkey George, Deputy Director, Dairy Development Department, interacted with the farmers and highlighted the importance of scientific livestock management practices and the departmental support available to them.
An expert lecture on “Optimal Nutrition Management of Dairy Animals” highlighted the role of balanced feeding in maintaining animal health and improving productivity. This was followed by an expert session on “Reproductive Problems and Fertility Management of Dairy Cattle”, conducted by ICAR-NIANP scientists. The experts discussed major reproductive challenges in dairy cattle and scientific approaches to improving reproductive health and fertility.
The farmers were encouraged to adopt appropriate nutritional and reproductive management practices and utilise NIANP technologies, including Fertimin Plus and feed charts, as part of scientific livestock management.
Around 73 Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste dairy and livestock farmers participated in the programme.
