ICAR–National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, Regional Centre, Jorhat, in collaboration with the Department of Land Resources, Government of Nagaland, successfully organized a three-day technical workshop-cum-training programme on “Utilization of Land Resource Inventory (LRI) for Optimum Natural Resource Management and Soil-Water Conservation Planning in 11 Micro-Watersheds of Peren District” from June 29 to July 1, 2026, at Kohima.
The programme aimed to build the technical capacity of state officials for effective utilization of high-resolution LRI datasets in watershed-based planning and sustainable natural resource management. Participants were trained on soil resource characterization, GIS-based thematic mapping, crop suitability assessment for coffee, rubber and arecanut, soil taxonomy, and preparation of scientifically sound soil and water conservation plans.

Addressing the participants, Dr N. G. Patil, Director, ICAR-NBSS&LUP, emphasized the importance of scientific land resource information for sustainable agricultural development in the hill ecosystems of Nagaland.
Mr Albert Ngullie, CEO, DoLR, Govt. of Nagaland stressed on initiating LRI in the Nagaland at large scale for developing soil resource data bank in the state for utilization under various enterprises.
The technical reports on the Land Resource Information System for Selected Micro-Watersheds of Peren District of Nagaland has been releases during the workshop.

The programme concluded with a valedictory session and certificate distribution. A key outcome of the training was the recommendation to initiate LRI-based land use planning across priority watersheds in Nagaland and strengthen the state’s geospatial soil information database to support planners, policymakers and sustainable agricultural development.
