ICAR–Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad, celebrated Farmers’ Day today at its Rajendranagar campus, drawing active participation from around 400 farmers representing Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, and Karnataka.
As part of the programme, a field visit was organized to familiarize farmers with improved rice production technologies and best management practices. Participants showed keen interest in ICAR–IIRR released rice cultivars such as DRR Dhan 48, 60, and 79, and expressed strong appreciation for DRR Dhan 87, a promising high-yielding variety soon to be released and notified. An exhibition showcasing various ICAR-IIRR-developed technologies was also arranged for the benefit of attendees.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Director, ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone X, who highlighted the significant technologies developed by ICAR–IIRR and urged farmers to adopt them to reduce cultivation costs. The Chief Guest also touched upon the use of biochar in rice production, certification for natural farming products, and potential alternative uses of rice and its by-products.
Representatives from Prakriti Environment Society, Hyderabad, and the Telangana State FPO Association, Mahabubabad, joined as Guests of Honour. They emphasized the need for farmers to effectively utilize government schemes and services, appreciated ICAR–IIRR’s high-yielding varieties and technologies, and underscored the importance of breeding pest- and disease-resistant rice varieties.
In his welcome address, Director, ICAR–IIRR, reiterated the institute’s commitment to advancing rice research for the welfare of farming communities. A detailed overview of the institute’s major achievements was presented by the Head, Crop Production.

On the occasion, a Telugu publication on comprehensive rice production technologies and improved management practices was released.
The programme concluded with the felicitation of several progressive farmers in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the farming community.
