Scientists from ICAR–Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune visited Kharpudi village, Taluka Khed, District Pune under the ongoing “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” to create awareness among farmers on sustainable agricultural practices and efficient nutrient management. The programme was organized in collaboration with the State Agriculture Department, wherein scientists interacted with farmers and RAWE students and conducted field-level discussions on balanced fertilizer application based on soil health and crop requirements.

During the interaction, the scientists emphasized the importance of judicious and balanced fertilizer use to improve nutrient use efficiency, reduce cultivation costs, and maintain long-term soil fertility. Farmers were sensitized about the adverse effects of indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and the need for adopting Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practices for sustainable crop production.

The team also conducted demonstrations on alternative sources of plant nutrients, including farmyard manure, compost, vermicompost, crop residues, and other locally available organic resources. Special emphasis was laid on the role of biofertilizers such as Azotobacter, Azospirillum, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, and mycorrhizae in enhancing nutrient availability and improving soil biological activity. Scientists also highlighted the importance of green manuring in improving soil organic matter, soil structure, and sustaining long-term fertility. Various components of natural farming and the role of on-farm inputs in promoting environmentally sustainable and economically viable agriculture were also discussed.

As part of the visit, the scientists also visited fields of floriculture farmers cultivating rose, gerbera, marigold, and other flower crops in the village. Field observations were made on crop growth, nutrient management practices, and overall crop health. Extensive interactions were held with farmers to understand challenges related to soil health, increasing input costs, nutrient management, pest and disease incidence, and market constraints in floriculture cultivation.

Based on field observations, suitable scientific recommendations were provided to address the issues, and discussions were held on adopting sustainable and resource-conserving practices in floriculture.

A total of 23 farmers including 11 women actively participated in the programme and expressed keen interest in the technologies and scientific interventions demonstrated during the visit.
