A team of scientists from ICAR–Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune, visited Shiroli village in Khed taluka of Pune district today under the ongoing Khet Bachao Abhiyan to create awareness among farmers on sustainable agricultural practices and efficient nutrient management.
During the visit, the scientists interacted with farmers and emphasized the importance of balanced fertilizer application based on soil health and crop requirements. Discussions focused on the adverse effects of indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and the need to adopt integrated nutrient management practices for sustainable crop production.

The team highlighted the importance of judicious and balanced fertilizer use to improve nutrient use efficiency, reduce input costs, and maintain long-term soil fertility. Scientists also explained the role of alternative nutrient sources such as farmyard manure, compost, vermicompost, crop residues, and other locally available organic resources in enhancing soil health. In addition, the importance of green manuring was discussed for improving soil organic matter, enhancing soil structure, and sustaining soil fertility.
As part of the programme, the scientists visited the fields of floriculture farmers cultivating rose and other flower crops in the village. Field observations were conducted to assess crop growth, nutrient management practices, and overall crop health.
Based on these observations, scientists recommended suitable scientific interventions to address farmers’ concerns and discussed the adoption of sustainable and resource-conserving practices in floriculture.
A total of 28 farmers, including two women, participated in the programme.
