ICAR–DFR Celebrates 16th Foundation Day with Industry, Farmer and Research Community Participation

The ICAR–Directorate of Floricultural Research (DFR), Pune, celebrated its 16th Foundation Day with vibrant participation from scientists, dignitaries, industry leaders, farmers, FPOs, nurseries, and floriculture-based start-ups. The programme commenced with a field visit to the institute’s research farms, where visitors reviewed ongoing initiatives in varietal improvement, protected cultivation, and technological advancements in floriculture. This was followed by the ICAR Song and a floral welcome, setting a dignified tone for the day.

The Chief Guest Prof. Sunil S. Bhagwat, Director, IISER Pune, delivered an insightful and motivating address, emphasizing the pivotal role of agricultural research in strengthening India’s scientific capabilities. He highlighted the importance of innovation, future readiness, and expressed gratitude to farmers and research institutions for elevating India’s global standing.

Dr. K. V. Prasad, Director, ICAR-DFR delivered the introductory remarks, highlighting ICAR-DFR’s achievements in research, technology development, capacity building, farmer outreach, and industry collaborations. He reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to providing sustainable and science-driven solutions for the advancement of India’s floriculture sector.

The event was graced by Directors of ICAR institutes in Pune, officers of the Indian Forest Service (IFoS) and Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and representatives from the Crop Care Federation of India (CCFI), including its Senior Advisor. Their presence underscored the strong institutional support and multi-sector partnerships that contribute to ICAR-DFR’s continued progress. Progressive farmers, FPOs, PFCs, nurseries, entrepreneurs, and start-ups were also felicitated for their achievements and for adopting advanced floriculture technologies.

A thematic workshop on “Balancing Agrochemical Use for Environmental and Farm Workers’ Safety,” conducted by expert scientists from ICAR-DFR and CCFI, offered guidance on responsible agrochemical practices, regulatory aspects, and safety measures. More than 250 plant protection safety kits were distributed to farmers during the session.

In the afternoon, a Brainstorming Session on the Draft Seed Bill–2025 brought together scientists, nursery experts, and industry representatives to discuss its implications, regulatory improvements, seed quality enhancement, and emerging opportunities for the floriculture sector.

The event concluded with a warm vote of thanks, with Dr. Prasad and the ICAR-DFR team expressing gratitude to all dignitaries and participants. The 16th Foundation Day served as a meaningful celebration of scientific advancement, collaboration, and shared vision, reinforcing ICAR-DFR’s commitment to sustainable and farmer-centric floriculture development.
