9 July 2026, Soreng, Sikkim

Reinforcing its commitment to sustainable inland fisheries and livelihood enhancement in the North Eastern Hill (NEH) region, the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati, in collaboration with the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Sikkim, organised an awareness-cum-input distribution programme at Rothak Fish Farm, Soreng district, on the eve of National Fish Farmers' Day.

During the technical sessions, scientists from ICAR-CIFRI delivered practical demonstrations and expert guidance on scientific pond management, water quality management, advanced aquaculture technologies for improving fish productivity and farm profitability, and scientific management of ornamental fishes in aquaria. The interactive sessions provided a valuable platform for farmers to discuss field-level challenges and receive tailor-made scientific solutions for enhancing productivity, sustainability, and income. The programme was organised under the overall guidance of Dr Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, along with other senior officials.

A key attraction of the programme was the distribution of 21 aquarium units, complete with ornamental fishes, fish feed, and essential accessories, to nearby schools. This unique initiative seeks to inspire young minds by fostering interest in ornamental fisheries, promoting environmental stewardship, enhancing awareness of aquatic biodiversity, and encouraging scientific fishkeeping through experiential learning.

Reflecting on the occasion, Dr Dey remarked: "On the eve of National Fish Farmers' Day, this initiative exemplifies ICAR-CIFRI's steadfast commitment to empowering fish farmers through science-driven innovations while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. By fostering stronger partnerships with the State Fisheries Departments, we are building resilient and sustainable fisheries ecosystems that enhance livelihoods, strengthen nutritional security, conserve aquatic biodiversity, and accelerate the inclusive and sustainable development of the North Eastern region."

The programme brought together 63 fish farmers and officials of the Department of Fisheries to promote science-driven aquaculture, strengthen farmers' capacities, and accelerate the adoption of sustainable fisheries practices across the region.

The successful programme highlights ICAR-CIFRI's sustained commitment to strengthening partnerships with State Fisheries Departments for advancing climate-resilient, science-based inland fisheries and aquaculture. Through knowledge dissemination, technology transfer, and capacity building, such initiatives are contributing to enhanced fish production, improved farm incomes, nutritional security, biodiversity conservation, and resilient fisheries-based livelihoods across the North Eastern Hill region.
