ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kolkata Centre, has initiated a scientific demonstration programme on species diversification in carp polyculture to enhance fish productivity and profitability from traditional aquaculture practices in Sunpura, Lohit District, Arunachal Pradesh.
The programme, implemented under the NEH Scheme, is being conducted for the first time in 25 farmers’ ponds in the area. The method demonstration, based on the concept of ‘farmers into research’, was initiated in the ponds of farmers who had previously undergone a skill development training programme conducted by ICAR-CIFE.
As part of the programme, critical aquaculture inputs, including fish fingerlings and pelleted fish feed, were distributed in the presence of senior officials and other stakeholders.
The participating farmers stocked the fish fingerlings in their ponds in the presence of ICAR-CIFE scientists. Technical guidance was also provided on pre-stocking, stocking and post-stocking management practices for carp polyculture to facilitate the adoption of scientific aquaculture practices.
The demonstration programme is expected to encourage the adoption of improved carp polyculture practices among around 100 fish farmers in the area, thereby contributing to enhanced fish production and improved income for farmers in Lohit District and the State of Arunachal Pradesh.
A total of 25 farmers, including four women, participated in the extension programme and received the critical aquaculture inputs.
