ICAR-CIBA Celebrates National Fish Farmers’ Day 2025

ICAR–Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai, celebrated National Fish Farmers’ Day 2025 today with the participation of around 60 fish farmers from Kottaikadu and Kolathur villages in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu.

ICAR-CIBA scientists engaged with the farmers and fishers to highlight the significance of the day and shared insights on various brackishwater aquaculture technologies, including seabass nursery rearing, cage farming, ornamental fish culture, integrated fish and seaweed systems, water quality management, and Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA).

Members of Self-Help Groups shared their success stories in seabass cage farming and nursery rearing under the SCSP scheme, expressing gratitude to Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal, Director, ICAR–CIBA, and the project team for their continuous support.

Kakdwip Research Centre, West Bengal, also marked the occasion with 75 fish farmers, with participation from Shri Madhav Chandra Laya, Member, Sibrampur Gram Panchayat. Farmers were introduced to PlanktonPlus technology for low-salinity carp culture, and pearl spot seeds were distributed to promote crop diversification. Beneficiaries shared their experiences of adopting KRC technologies, which have enhanced their income and livelihoods.

Navsari Gujarat Research Centre observed the day with 51 fish farmers, focusing on awareness about research and extension activities. A live stream of the national-level event from ICAR–CIFA, Bhubaneswar, was also arranged to connect participants with the broader celebrations.

The observance across regions showcased ICAR–CIBA’s continued efforts to empower fish farmers through technology transfer, capacity building, and community engagement in brackishwater aquaculture.
