Salvinia, a problematic aquatic weed in Kerala and the other parts of South India, was found in Satpura Reservoir in Sarni Town of Betul district, and 3 to 4 Village of Jabalpur and Katni Districts of Madhya Pradesh adversely affecting the irrigation, hydroelectric generation, water availability and navigation besides drastic reduction in production of fish and aquatic crops (water chestnut).

ICAR- Directorate of weed Research, Jabalpur completely cleared the Salvinia infested approximately 1100 hectares of the Satpura Water Reservoir at Satpura Thermal Power Station (STPS) in Sarni and 20 ha pond in Katni district of Madhya Pradesh within 18 months through strategic release and periodic monitoring of insect bio-agent Cyrtobagus salviniae. In addition, this technology helped in restoring ecological equilibrium and brought about a positive transformation in the livelihoods of local fishermen who had suffered from decreased fishing opportunities due to the dense weed cover. This success story highlights the effectiveness of integrating biological control methods with socio-economic considerations for the sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems.
