ICAR–National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, Hyderabad, successfully organized a two-day workshop on ‘Application of Bioinformatics in Accelerating Biological Research’ on 20–21 January 2026. The programme was organised under the Social Scientific Responsibility component of the ANRF–Anusandhan National Research Foundation funded Core Research Grant project titled ‘Identification and Characterization of Superior Haplotypes for Agronomically Important Traits in Rice’ in association with NAAS Hyderabad Chapter.
Dr. R. M. Sundaram, Director, ICAR-IIRR, in his remarks, highlighted the growing importance of bioinformatics and artificial intelligence in modern research and emphasized the transformation of large biological datasets into meaningful insights using advanced computational tools.

The workshop aimed to acquaint researchers with contemporary bioinformatics approaches, promote knowledge sharing, and facilitate exchange of ideas among researchers from diverse disciplines. Participants represented various nearby colleges and institutes, including Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU), P.V. Narasimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University (PVNRTVU), Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University (SKLTGHU), Agri Biotech Foundation (ABF) and ICAR-IIRR.
In his valedictory address, Dr. Gopal Lal, Director, ICAR-NAARM, stressed the importance of adopting emerging technologies for farmer-centric solutions.
The programme covered important topics such as genomics-assisted breeding for climate-resilient rice, genome editing for crop improvement, gene enrichment analysis, and an introduction to next-generation sequencing (NGS) and analysis pipelines. The programme also focused on basic bioinformatics tools and RNA-Seq data analysis, along with an interactive ideas and insights exchange session.
