The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil & Water Conservation, Research Centre, Ballari, Karnataka organized a Webinar on “Importance of Millets in Dryland Agriculture” today.
The Chief Guest, Dr. G. Girish, Assistant Professor and Scheme Head, ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project on Sorghum, ARS, Hagari, Ballari apprised the participants about the origin and domestication of Millets, its introduction to India, nutritional values of Millets and the way the policy and food industry paved the way for declining Millet production in the country.
Dr. Rajendra Hegde, Head, ICAR-National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, Regional Centre, Bengaluru, Karnataka; Dr. Jagadish, SMS, KVK, Hagari and Dr. Praveen Jakar, Senior Scientist, ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture, Bhubaneswar, Odisha marked their presence as the Guests of Honor during the occasion.
In his inaugural address, Dr. M. Madhu, Director, ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun, Uttarakhand highlighted the possible benefits of Millet cultivation under the water constraint and climate change scenario.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. B.S. Naik, Head, ICAR-IISWC, Research Centre, Ballari, Karnataka briefed about the importance of growing Millets in the Semi-Arid Region of Karnataka dealing with the inherent problem of water scarcity.
A total of 47 participants participated in the Webinar.
The Webinar was organized as a part of the “Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav” to commemorate 75 Years of India’s Independence.
