In a proactive effort to promote environmentally sustainable and economically viable aquaculture practices, the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati, conducted a focused awareness programme on soil health management and the balanced use of fertilisers at Hezamara Block in West Tripura district today. The programme was held today at the Conference Hall of the Pisciculture Knowledge Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Tripura.
The initiative aimed to sensitize stakeholders on the pivotal role of soil health in determining the productivity and sustainability of aquaculture systems. Emphasis was placed on reducing reliance on indiscriminate and non-scientific fertilization practices, and instead adopting balanced, need-based nutrient management approaches. Experts highlighted that maintaining optimal soil conditions in fish ponds is fundamental to regulating water quality, enhancing natural productivity, and ensuring healthy fish growth, thereby improving overall yield and profitability.

Deliberations during the programme underscored the importance of periodic soil testing, appropriate selection and application of organic and inorganic fertilisers, and the adoption of integrated nutrient management strategies tailored to local conditions. These practices were presented as key to achieving long-term ecological balance while minimizing input costs and environmental risks.
The event drew active participation from around 100 stakeholders, including cage fishers, scientists, fisheries officials, public representatives, and media personnel. The interactive sessions fostered knowledge exchange and practical learning, enabling participants to better understand the scientific principles underpinning sustainable aquaculture. The programme ultimately reinforced the need for a holistic approach that integrates soil health management with fisheries development to build a resilient and productive aquaculture sector in the region.
