Virtual Training Programme on “Hilsa Fishery Conservation for livelihood improvement” organized

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata organized a Virtual Training Programme on “Hilsa Fishery Conservation for livelihood improvement” today.

In his inaugural address, Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata highlighted the Institute’s interventions and research activities on Hilsa carried out from 2012 to 2020. Dr. Das urged scientists, fishermen and administrative officials to work as a team towards Mission Hilsa. He also highlighted the youths’ involvement in the Hilsa conservation programme.

Dr. Sandeep Behera, Senior Consultant, Biodiversity Conservation,   National Mission for Clean Ganga, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India highlighted the role of regional research collaboration particularly for the trans-boundary aquatic animals and ICAR-CIFRI’s role for scientific involvement and outputs.

Prof. Abdul Wahab, Team Leader, ECOFISH Project-USAID, WorldFish, Bangladesh outlined the important role of science-based community participation for Hilsa production improvement in Bangladesh.

The main objective of the training programme was to make the stakeholders aware and highlight the community participation in the biodiversity conservation plan specific to Hilsa fishery.

More than 260 participants representing fishermen, students, fisheries officials from different states and personnel from Universities and Research Institutes virtually participated in the programme.
