The Zonal Technology Management & Business Planning and Development Unit, in collaboration with the Centre for Conservation and Utilization of Blue Green Algae & Microbiology Division, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, organized a 4-day Agripreneurship Development Programme on ‘Cultivation & Processing of Spirulina Biomass towards Developing Value-Added Products’ from 28th to 31st January 2025.
The programme aimed to educate entrepreneurs, progressive farmers, and students on the cultivation, processing, and value addition of Spirulina platensis, a highly nutritious microalga known for its health benefits. It covered essential topics, including large-scale production techniques, innovative cultivation methods, and maintaining high-quality standards. Participants also received hands-on training in harvesting, drying, processing, and formulating Spirulina-based products, such as dietary supplements and functional foods.
Dr Cherukumalli Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR-IARI, interacted with participants and highlighted the importance of such programs in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture. He encouraged them to actively engage in these initiatives to expand their knowledge, stay updated on emerging trends, and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.
The programme also explored business and market opportunities, focusing on the growing global demand for Spirulina and its derivatives. Experts shared insights on business development strategies and market entry pathways, while interactive sessions encouraged knowledge-sharing on the commercial potential of Spirulina cultivation. To enhance the learning experience, a field visit to a Spirulina farm in Bahadurgarh was organized, providing participants with practical exposure to the real-world application of the techniques discussed.
The training saw the participation of 34 individuals from across India, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.
