Training programme on Resource Conservation Technologies for Climate-Resilient Hill Agriculture organised

ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Research Centre, Udagamandalam organized a training programme on ‘Resource Conservation Technologies for Climate-Resilient Hill Agriculture’ at Attadi village, Kotagiri, under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) today. The programme aimed to create awareness among the farming community in Attadi and Athipadigai villages about resource conservation practices/ soil and water conservation technologies suited to the region’s unique agricultural landscape.

Dr J. Somasundaram, Head & Principal Scientist of the institute, highlighted the importance of soil and water conservation technologies developed specifically for the Nilgiris region. 

As a part of the initiative (TSP), essential agricultural tools and materials were distributed to farmers, including micro-sprinkler units, high-yielding vegetable seeds, hose pipes, poultry cages, coffee pulping machines, umbrellas, synthetic drying sheets, water storage tanks, battery sprayers, power sprayers, farm tools, and storage cans. These equipment and materials are not only helpful for timely field operation but also provide livelihood support to the farming community.

A technical session was also oragnised by the experts from KVK, the horticulture department, and ICAR scientists. The session focused on equipping farmers with advanced agricultural practices and innovative techniques to enhance productivity and income. Additionally, an exhibition was conducted to showcase cutting-edge technologies for land and water management, further supporting sustainable agricultural development in the region. Eighty farming families from the Irula tribes benefited from this programme

About 110 farmers participated along with officials from KVK, the horticulture department, NGOs, and ICAR. 

Smt. Blessy V.A., Dr P. Sundarambal, and Shri A. Murugesan under the guidance of Dr J Somasundaram, Head of the Centre, coordinated the programme.
