A three-day training programme on the ‘Conservation of Indigenous Livestock & Poultry’ was organised at the ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ri-Bhoi, from 11th to 13th February 2025. The event was sponsored by the Network Project on Animal Genetic Resources under the ICAR Regional Centre for North Eastern Hill (NEH) Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. The primary aim of the programme was to educate farmers on the importance of preserving Indigenous livestock and poultry breeds.
During the training, experts from KVK and ICAR emphasized the unique adaptability of these breeds to the region’s environment and highlighted the need for sustainable breeding and management practices to ensure their survival. Sessions covered genetic diversity, breed identification, and best practices for livestock management.
Practical demonstrations were conducted to show how to improve productivity while maintaining genetic integrity. Participants also visited the KVK Ri-Bhoi and ICAR Umiam demonstration farms to observe sustainable practices firsthand. The programme concluded with the distribution of poultry and pig feeds, along with essential veterinary medicines, in the presence of the Director of ICAR Umiam, Meghalaya, and the Head of KVK Ri-Bhoi.
The event ended with a call for collaborative efforts to conserve these valuable resources, which are crucial for the region's cultural heritage and agricultural economy.
A total of 28 progressive farmers from five villages in the Ri-Bhoi district attended the training programme.
