ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized one-day workshop on “Stakeholders, Consultation cum Consultative Workshop on Fish Conservation and Ranching in River Ganga” today to address the accomplishment of the three-year project of NMCG, under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India.
Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and Principal Investigators, NMCG, briefed about the mission mode ranching, which released more than 65 lakhs of fish fingerlings during the period 2020-23 covering five states namely Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. He emphasised the effects of the most recent Ganga ranching programme, which led to a rise in IMC landings of 24.70% in Prayagraj, 41.03% in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and more than 25% in Patna, Bihar. He accentuated that project for the included 140 public awareness campaigns covering 10,000 fishermen. He emphasised that, 227 lakhs of IMC seeds were generated by connecting with the fishermen and launching numerous river ranching operations across the nation, the project has made significant progress in many different areas.
Twelve local fishermen expressed concern over zero mesh fishing nets and poisonous practices in the Ganga River, highlighting the need for improved fishing practices.
Experts from West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, BOBP, WII, Dept of Fisheries, West Bengal, Scientist of ICAR-CIFE and ICAR-CIFRI, and research scholars participated in the workshop.
