The second meeting of Orchid Task Force and awareness and training programme were organized on 30-31st January, 2014 at the NRC for Orchids, Pakyong.
Dr. A.N. Rao, Director, Orchid Research & Development Centre, Manipur chaired the meeting. The day long discussion was held in finalizing the DUS test guidelines of Paphiopedilum and Oncidium orchids and the Chairman of the task force was satisfied over the work done in preparing the guidelines.
Dr. Manoj Srivastava, Registrar (PPV&FRA); Dr. P.K. Rajeevan, Former Dean, KAU; Dr. S.R. Dhiman, Floriculturist, UHF, Solan; Dr. R.P. Medhi, Director, NRC for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim were also present during the meeting.
Earlier, Dr. L.C. De, Principal Scientist (Hort.) and Member Secretary, Orchid Task Force welcomed the dignitaries and presented the status of work before the committee, while Dr. Manoj Srivastava proposed the vote of thanks.
On 31st January, 2014, a day-long awareness-cum-training programme on ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmer’s Right Act’ was organized at the training hall of the institute to bring awareness about the role of PPV&FRA among the researcher’s and farmers’ community.
Dr. A. N. Rao was the Chief-Guest on the occasion. Dr. Rao presented a lecture on orchid diversity of North East India and its ecological, economic importance and conservation.
Dr. Manoj Srivastava, Registrar, PPV&FRA and Shri. D.K. Bhandari, Joint Director, HCCD Department, Government of Sikkim were the Guest of Honour. Dr. Srivastava presented a lecture highlighting the role of PPV&FRA and its objectives to the participants.
Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Research-Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong, Gangtok; Shri Padam Subba, Joint Director, HCCD Department, Government of Sikkim and Shri D. Adhikari, Farmer’s representative of ICAR Governing body for the North Eastern Zone were also present at the meet.
During the technical session of the programme Dr. P.K. Rajeevan presented a lecture on DUS testing with special reference to Phalaenopsis orchids to the participants, while Dr. S.R. Dhiman gave a lecture on DUS test guidelines on carnation.
Earlier, Dr. R.P. Medhi, Director, NRC for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim welcomed the dignitaries and farmer friends and hoped that this kind of awareness-cum-training programme will certainly benefit both the research and farmer’s community in understanding the role of PPV&FRA.
Participants from GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Sikkim; ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong and its KVK; CAU, Ranipool and Scientists, RA/SRF and technical officials of the centre and farmers from East Sikkim participated in the programme.
