Workshop on ‘Food Security for healthy life’ in Convergence Mode

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR Sikkim Centre, Ranipool, East Sikkim organised a State level Workshop on ‘Food security for healthy life’ on 7th September, 2013.

In his Inaugural address, Shri G. P. Upadhyaya, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of SJEW, Government of Sikkim lauded the efforts of ICAR scientists to make India surplus in food grain production. He expressed satisfaction over the capacity of food grain storage by FCI, which is much more than the buffer requirement of our country. He said that Food Security Bill, 2013 would give legal enforcement right to all citizens to have easy access to enough, safe and nutritious food.

Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Sikkim Centre said that India has made a quantum jump from subsistence agriculture to intensive agriculture through the research accomplishments of the scientists in the form of HYV, improved crop management technologies like SRI, ICM, IPM, IWM and post harvest management etc. He also called upon the scientists to face the challenges of climate change. 

Miss K.K. Subba, Director, ICDS, Government of Sikkim was the Guest of Honour of the workshop. She emphasized upon the need based programmes of ICDS to reach the grass-root level to eradicate the problem of under nourished and malnourished children, women and adults in the society.

Earlier, Dr. A.K. Mohanty, Programme Coordinator, KVK, ICAR Sikkim Centre, Ranipool welcomed the dignitaries and briefed about the importance of observing National Nutrition Week-2013.

Shri P.K. Mishra, Demonstration Officer, Food & Nutrition Board, Government of India and Shri G.D. Sharma, Joint Director, ICDS also gave their valuable remarks.

Officials from State and Central Government agencies like ICDS, Nutrition, Health and Education, Agriculture departments of the state, ICAR, NGOs and over 60 delegates from the different departments of the state, KVK and scientists from ICAR Sikkim Centre participated in the workshop.
