26th March, 2013, Pakyong (Sikkim)
The National Research Centre for Orchids (ICAR), Pakyong observed Farmers’ Day on 26th March, 2013. Shri D. K. Bhandari, Joint Director, Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department, Govt. of Sikkim was invited as the Chief guest in the programme while Shri Padam Subba, Joint Director, Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department was the guest of Honour. Shri Dayaram, In-charge National Horticulture Board, Gangtok was invited as special guest in the programme. Dr. R. P. Medhi, Director of the Centre presided over the inaugural function. The programme was co-ordinated by Dr. R .P. Pant, Senior Scientist (Plant Pathology) and training organizer.
The guests addressed the farmers and spoke about the importance of Orchids in Sikkim, its commercial value in the market and why they should go for its serious cultivation. About 50 farmers participated in the one day training cum awareness programme on the occasion of from different villages of Sikkim viz., Damlakha, Yangang, Kartok, Tashithang, Sombaria and Pakyong. The training programme covered all the aspects on cultivation of Orchids including the post harvest management technologies, the marketing opportunities and also the various schemes implemented by the Government for upliftment of the farmers.
